Walking and Cycling
The area surrounding Butley Mills is perfect for walking and cycling, with miles of country lanes, heathland tracks and forest. You can walk and cycle directly from the Mill, or travel a little further to explore some of the other areas of this picturesque county and heritage coast.

The Mill has washing and drying facilities.
There is also lockers for drying wet weather gear and boots, for walkers and cyclists, and also a secure cycle store.

Passes by Butley Mills
The Suffolk Coastal Cycle Path follows a route that takes in the beautiful countryside along the Suffolk Coast. The Route passes along Mill Lane.

Tunstall and Rendlesham Forest

1 to 2 Miles from Butley Mills
Both of these forests boarder the villages of Butley and Chillesford and can be reached from the Mill easily by car, cycle or on foot. The forests are managed by the Forestry Commission and are home to two Second World War air bases, RAF Woodbridge and RAF Bentwaters (both now dormant).
Rendlesham forest is the larger of the two forests, with 1500 hectares of mixed woodland and miles of forest track. This is also the location for the famous UFO sighting in the 1980s and the Rendlesham Forest Visitors Centre boasts a ‘UFO Walk’ which ideal for the family.
There are two off road trails that are suitable for the family as well as picnic areas to make a family day out.

1 to 2 Miles from Butley Mills
The Sandlings are an area near to the Mill which is recognisable by the sandy soil. The is well known for its heathland and forest wildlife.
The Sandlings Long Distance Footpath meanders through this area.

Further up the coast you have Dunwich Heath which is an area of heathland with many miles of tracks and footpaths. There is also the coast at Aldeburgh where you can go for a stroll along the shingle beach (works well with a visit to Aldebrough for ‘fish and chips’).
